Here's the story on the stands. Two of these were part or the original five whimsical stands designed by William Lane Architect in 1995 after Hurricane Andrew. They won an AIA Award for Excellence in Design and are a popular fixture on South Beach. The round one, also known as the "Jetson Tower", was co-designed by artist Kenny Scharf. Does the name sound familiar? It should--I recently posted a shot of his take on the Houston Street Wall in NYC. The others are all variations on a more traditional utilitarian tower painted to add visual interest and a little spice to the beach.
