Asher Nolan: The Wildcard

Sunday was the big surf-off to see who would win the final slot in the big dance over at the Quiksilver Pro. Asher Nolan, out of Florida, came away with the prized spot. Here are a few shots of him from a day he won't soon forget.

People Watching at the Quiksilver Pro

I've been shooting at the Quiksilver Pro surfing competition for a few days now and will be there for a few more. What a great event! There's so much going on every day and I'm getting so many good photos--its getting tough to keep up with it all. I'll probably be posting on this event for the next couple of weeks! Before we get into the surfing itself, let's build some anticipation with a little people watching.

Tony Hawk Vert Jam

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending a little time with Tony Hawk and his Birdhouse crew on their summer tour as they opened the festivities for the Quiksilver Pro surf competition over at Pier 54. The crowd was massive and the guys (Tony, Kevin Staab, Jesse Fritsch, Mitchie Brusco, Sandro Dias, Neal Hendrix and Elliot Sloan) hit the skies with all their signature tricks. Lucky me got to watch from the flight deck! Here's my traditional collage plus some larger selects:

New York Magazine

An image I previously posted on the blog here, one that I shot as a volunteer structural engineer at the World Trade Center site, is running full page in the current issue of New York Magazine. The "9/11, One Day, Ten Years" issue is great from cover to cover--go pick it up!
I'm really happy the crew over at New York Magazine was able to print this at full-page--the photo really needs to be this big to convey the scale of the scene. It was 2001 and I shot it with a 1MP point-and-shoot probably set to about 1/2 MP, so I was worried it wouldn't hold up well printed large!!!

Long Beach Early Session

Summer is winding down. If you want to catch the last warm-weather waves, you've got to paddle out early. Here's some morning session photos shot last week (before Irene ravaged the beach) on the same waves the pros will hit starting next week.

More from Long Beach Surf City

Here's some more shots of the Quiksilver Pro build out in Long Beach. Hurricane Irene is forecast to make landfall for this coming weekend. I suppose they should batten down the hatches...
